Afrika kıtası sahip olduğu nüfusu, zengin doğal kaynakları, geniş arazisi ve çok sayıda gelişmekte olan ülkeyi bünyesinde barındırmasının yanı sıra dünyanın ekonomik istikrarı ve büyümesi açısından büyük önem arz etmektedir.
Buna rağmen 1950–2000 dönemine ait göstergelere bakıldığında, kıtanın Gayri Safi Milli Hâsılası’nın (GSMH) dünya ekonomisindeki payının, ihracattaki ve kıtaya yönelik dış yatırımlardaki azalmanın etkisiyle endişe verici boyutlara ulaştığını söylemek mümkündür.
Kıtanın ekonomik büyüme oranının oldukça düşük olması ve doğrudan yabancı yatırımlarda görülen azalma, Afrika’nın diğer kıtalarla kıyaslandığında dünya ticaretindeki payının oldukça gerilerde kalması sonucunu da beraberinde getirmektedir.
Bunun yanı sıra Afrika’nın son beş yılı aşkın bir dönemde ise kıtanın nispeten yüksek büyüme oranları yakaladığını, dış yatırımlardaki akışın ve ihracattan elde edilen kazançların arttığını söylemek mümkündür.
Introduction
SNV, Netherlands development Organisation, provides advisory services to nearly 1800 local organisations in over 30 developing countries to support their fight against poverty.
SNV is dedicated to a society where all people enjoy the freedom to pursue their own sustainable development. Our advisors contribute to this by strengthening the capacity of local organisations. SNV’s goal is to support local actors to strengthen their performance in effectively realising poverty reduction and good governance.
Poverty results from unequal access to resources and power, between different social and cultural groups and between men and women. SNV believes the basic purpose of development is to enlarge people's choices; to create an enabling environment for people to enjoy long, healthy and creative lives.
The fight against poverty needs strong organisations that serve the interests of the poor and are able to change the structures that sustain poverty. SNV works with organisations that operate at district and provincial level and function as linking pins between national policies and frameworks and the people living in towns and communities. Its clients include private, governmental and civil society organisations.
These organisations are served by locally present teams of national and international experts. SNV’s added value is that its experts combine their thematic expertise with skills in organisational development, partnership building and institutional strengthening. Capacity development of local organisations is crucial for sustained poverty reduction and good governance. It must be linked to tangible impacts and must focus on key local actors, including local capacity builders. Capacity development must be embedded within national development strategies (National Poverty Reduction Strategies or other). Capacity development is not about transferring resources, but about facilitating resourcefulness. National Poverty Reduction Strategies will fail if the macro-micro divide is not bridged. Access to national level policy setting, planning and resources is critical for effective poverty reduction by local actors. Capacity Development Services offered to key actors at the intermediary level contributes to making the system work and thus to impact.
Bilim ve teknolojide meydana gelen göz kamaştırıcı gelişmeler hem iktisadi hem de siyasi anlamda birçok yapısal değişimlere yol açmaktadır. İçinde bulunduğumuz yüzyıl, sermayenin yeryüzünde ulus-ötesi bir nitelik arz ederek dolaştığı bir yüzyıldır. Eskiden saatlerce kol gücü kullanılarak yapılan işler ileri teknoloji ürünü makineler vasıtasıyla çok kısa bir zaman diliminde yapılabilmektedir. Bu nedenle çalışma saatleri azalmakta ve çalışanlar için daha fazla boş zaman ortaya çıkmaktadır.
Bu yüzyılda, bilim ve teknolojinin getirdiği yenilikler nitelikli işgücünün sayısını arttırmakla birlikte doğal olarak nitelikli işgücünün kazancını da arttırmaktadır. Aynı zamanda az sayıda nitelikli işgücünün komuta ettiği ileri teknoloji ürününü (bilgisayarlar, robotlar vs.) kullanan şirketler daha çok kazanmakta ve bu sayede önemli bir sermaye birikimi oluşmaktadır. Bütün bu değişim ve dönüşümler küreselleşmenin etkisiyle tüm dünyayı etkilemekte, dünyamızı küresel bir köy haline getirmektedir . Artık dünyanın bir ucundan diğer bir ucuna milyarlarca dolar tutarındaki fonlar ışık hızıyla transfer edilmekte, internetin de kullanılmasıyla ülkeler arasındaki bilgi transferi, bilgiye erişimin önündeki sınırlar kalkmaktadır. Tüm bu gelişmeler, insanların davranış kalıplarını, tüketim alışkanlıklarını değiştirmektedir. Daha çok kazanan birey teknolojinin sunduğu imkânları kullanarak boş zamanlarını farklı mekânlarda değerlendirmek istemektedir. Günümüzde ileri teknoloji ürünü uçaklar vasıtasıyla binlerce mil uzaklıktaki mekânlara kısa bir zaman diliminde ulaşmak mümkün hale gelmiştir. Tüm bu gelişmeler turizmi son derece önemli bir konuma getirmektedir.
My Name is Mrs Ida Njai, and I am the General Manager of the Mandina River Lodges at Makasutu Culture Forest. I have been involved in the tourism industry in The Gambia for over 20 years, in which time I have seen the country go through many changes.
I am here to represent The Gambia as a whole, but mainly focusing on a private eco tourism project that is leading the way in the world of responsible tourism.

THE GAMBIA-A BRIEF OUTLINE OF THE TOURISM INDUSTRY
The Gambia is one of the smallest countries in Africa, with an estimated population of just under 1.5 million people. As an ex-British colony, English is the official language, with Mandinka, Wolof, Fula and Jola being the main local languages spoken.
The country is dominated by The Gambia River, and is roughly 300 kms long, and averaging 35kms in width. The Gambia is surrounded on 3 sides by its bigger neighbour Senegal, except for 80 kms of coastline that boarders the Atlantic Ocean. The country is an area of around 11, 000 sq km. 90% of the population are Muslim.
